Improving:
School Attendance
Classroom Engagement
Academic Performance
in St. Louis Public Schools
In March 2017, St. Louis-based high school custodian, George Love, used money from his tax return and paychecks to give four hardworking students at Vashon High School $500 each ($2000 in total) in scholarship money. The scholarship money was raised privately by Mr. Love himself; not a penny was acquired through government assistance or fundraising.
Since then, Mr. Love and his Dorothy May Walker-Love Scholarship Fund has been featured on local TV news segments as well as the Steve Harvey show.
Our mission is simple: to increase school attendance rates, academic performance, and classroom engagement by motivating students with privately funded scholarships. Mr. Love wants to meet students where they’re at and show them that if they invest in themselves, others will invest in them too. With the help of generous donors, we can improve the outcomes of many more disadvantaged St. Louis high school students.
Showing up is half the battle. We aim to incentivize students to regularly attend classes, regardless of past performance.
While in class, students should be attentive, respectful, and engaged. Our scholarship incentives can improve behavior in the classroom.
While academic excellence is always desirable, we aim to improve students’ academic performance on an individual level. This inclusive approach allows us to inspire both high-performing and low-performing students to aim higher, regardless of where they are now. Our hope is that improvement-based scholarship qualification will increase SAT scores, ACT scores as well as graduation rates.
